City Reaches Agreement with Police on New Contract

April 07, 2010

The City has reached an agreement with the Edmonton Police Association on a new contract that sees the average five-year constable receive a 4.5% wage increase for each of 2009 and 2010, along with incremental adjustments to restore the historic wage difference between a police constable and a firefighter.

“We’re pleased to reach an agreement with the Edmonton Police Association,” said Pamela Kirkwood, the City’s Director of Labour Relations. “This will strengthen the relationship between the City and Edmonton’s police force.”

Under the terms of the new deal, the average five-year police constable in Edmonton will make $83,585 in 2010. The wage difference between a five-year Edmonton police constable and a five-year Edmonton firefighter is restored to 2.6%. The deal also ensures Edmonton will remain competitive in attracting new recruits.

Negotiations on a new contract had begun in early 2009. EPA membership ratified the City’s offer on April 6, 2010 and Executive Committee of City Council subsequently approved it.
