City Proposes New Green Plan as the Way to Sustainability

The Way We Green

May 04, 2011

Edmontonians are encouraged to join City Councillors in discussing The Way We Green environmental strategic plan to determine if the transformative 30-year strategy will bring to life the vision of being a sustainable, resilient city by 2040.

The 66-page draft plan will be presented and examined in a May 11 public hearing.

“The people of Edmonton are proud of our environmental leadership – most notably in the areas of residential waste diversion and the preservation of our river valley natural areas,” said Councillor Don Iveson, who helped launch the consultation process in early 2010. “But Edmontonians know we can do more to ensure we have a sustainable community for our children and grandchildren. This plan reflects bold ideas received in a year-long consultation process and is worthy of thoughtful discussion and debate.”
The Way We Green describes a future Edmonton that is carbon-neutral, generates zero waste, is significantly less dependent on fossil fuels, has clean air and water, is able to withstand and bounce back intact from a range of possible environmental disturbances.

“We developed the plan in close consultation with citizens, experts, and representatives from a full range of stakeholder organizations,” says project manager Jim Andrais from the City’s Office of Environment. “We were constantly challenged to examine threats and opportunities that will be specific to Edmonton and to push the envelope to reflect Edmontonians’ sober understanding of long-term planning.”

“People from various industries, people from environmental groups, people from community groups – all provided input to make this plan stronger, and a truly transformative strategy for our future.”

The plan identifies 12 goals, 43 objectives and 193 policies that take aim at Edmonton’s ecosystem challenges involving land, water, air, energy, climate change, food, and solid waste. The plan envisions day-to-day shifts in the behaviours of Edmontonians and actions of the City, with a focus on long-term maintenance of our high standard of living in an affordable, sustainable community.

The Way We Green plan is one of six directional plans being built on the City’s 10-year goals which will bring to life Edmontonians’ 30-year vision for our community.

Citizens who wish to speak to The Way We Green environmental strategic plan at the May 11 public hearing should call the Office of the City Clerk at 780-496-8178.
