City Launches Apps4Edmonton Competition
June 23, 2010
If you’ve ever thought, ‘there should be an app for that’, this is the competition for you. The City of Edmonton is challenging residents to come up with apps they think would be useful to Edmontonians, and is encouraging developers to build them. The best ideas can win an Apple iPad.
“This competition supports the City's vision to be innovative, inclusive and creative,” says Chris Moore, City of Edmonton, Chief Information Officer. "It promotes our commitment to be open and transparent and work with the community.”
An app can be any visualization, website, or mobile phone application that turns data into a user-friendly format for smart phones, mobile devices, and PC web browsers. Some of the apps that have already been built for Edmonton are Mystops and Route 411 using ETS data.
Contestants have the opportunity to compete for over $50,000 in prizes. Categories have been inspired by the six goals established in the City’s 10-year strategic vision – The Way We Live: Edmonton’s People Plan. Using data available in the Edmonton Open Data Catalogue.
Don’t know how to build an application? Don’t worry. All residents are encouraged to submit ideas for applications they would like to see in their community. All participants will have the chance to win an Apple iPad. Anyone can enter, and winners will be announced September 13, 2010.
