Citizen Dashboard Wins Silver Medal

Citizen Dashboard

February 18, 2014

Edmonton’s innovative Citizen Dashboard website has won a prestigious national public-sector leadership award.

The City was presented with a silver medal in municipal leadership for the Citizen Dashboard – an online tool which publishes data related to numerous City services – at the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC) / Deloitte Public Sector Leadership Awards 2014 gala in Toronto.

The Citizen Dashboard allows viewers to see how well the City is performing in providing municipal services, including pothole filling, the time it takes to process development permits, traffic safety rates and waste recycling.

“The City of Edmonton created the Citizen Dashboard to be accountable, open and transparent about its municipal services,” says Aileen Giesbrecht, director, Office of Strategic Services, Financial Services and Utilities. “This award is recognition from our municipal-administrator colleagues across Canada that we are at the forefront of the open-data movement.”

Edmonton is seen as a leader in open data among municipal governments in Canada. Edmonton’s commitment to open data began in 2009. Since then the City has launched the Citizen Dashboard, the Open Data Catalogue  and the Maps Gallery.

“By releasing real-time data through the Citizen Dashboard about services that matter most to the citizens we serve,” says Giesbrecht, “we hope to build public confidence in the work we do every day.”
