City to host 11 matches, including opening event
Edmontonians are excited to have been selected to host 11 matches, including the Opening Ceremonies and the first game, for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015. Edmonton will also host the bronze medal game, semi and quarters finals, and first round play including two matches involving Canada’s own women’s soccer team.
“This is fantastic news for the city and we are excited to have been selected to play such a significant role,” says Mayor Stephen Mandel. “Hosting the opening match is a huge opportunity for us to showcase our city and province. I get chills when I think that Edmonton will set the tone for the tournament.”
Edmonton will be one of six Canadian cities selected to host matches during the World Cup Canada 2015 which will be held June 6th to July 5th, 2015. Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Moncton are the other cities.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 will feature players from 24 national teams in a series of matches that will be played from coast to coast during the month-long competition.
City Manager Simon Farbrother says Edmonton’s outstanding efforts in hosting the 2002 FIFA Under 19 championships played a key role in the city’s prominent role in the schedule for 2015. “The opening game is a special moment. I think 20 years from now, people will be talking about that opening game in Edmonton watching Canada play in 2015 and remembering it,” he says. “It will be a proud moment for Edmonton, for Alberta and for Canada, a chance for us to share our spirit, passion and energy with the world.”
Tickets for the event will go on sale in the third quarter of 2014.
