Celebrate Canada Day 2013 in Edmonton
June 27, 2013Celebrate Canada’s 146th birthday by joining in on some of the many fun family events taking place around Edmonton. End the day by watching the spectacular Canada Day fireworks finale in the river valley.
Canada Day Fireworks FinaleTime: 11pm
Enjoy the magnificent fireworks display over Edmonton’s river valley parks and the North Saskatchewan River. Good viewing locations:
- Alberta Legislature Grounds
- Victoria Park (River Valley Road)
- Ezio Faraone Park (west entrance to High Level Bridge on 109 St. north)
- Dantzer’s Hill (below Queen Elizabeth Park)
- Government House Park (Groat Road & River Valley Road)
- Telus Field is offering a reduced admission price of $4 per person after the 8th inning of the Edmonton Prospects vs. the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets game for those who wish to view the fireworks. Food concessions will be open until 10:30pm.
Note: No viewing is available from Kinsmen Park.
Viewing areas accessible on foot only (closed to vehicles):
- River Valley Road
- Walterdale Hill Road & Queen Elizabeth Park Road
- 109 St. (between Saskatchewan Drive & the High Level Bridge)
- Access is restricted in Kinsmen Park, Walterdale Hill, High Level & Menzies Bridges after road closure times. Kinsmen playground and picnic area are closed on Canada Day
Note: Access to low-lying river valley trails may be closed and open trails should be approached with caution. Before entering the trail system, visit the website for current trail cautions and closures.
Road Closures for Fireworks Finale
Expect traffic delays two hours before the fireworks and 90 minutes after the show. Please be patient and courteous to help to make the trip home from the fireworks safe for everyone. For road closure details visit Road and Traffic updates.
Usual restrictions and increased parking bans will be in effect. With minimal parking in the area of many venues, Edmontonians are encouraged to take the bus or LRT. Vehicles illegally parked will be tagged and towed.
Canada Day Events in Edmonton
City Hall & Plaza
Time: 1 to 4pm
Celebrate Canada’s birthday with free Canada Day activities at City Hall. The fun kicks off with a Canada Day ceremony at 1pm in the City Room, followed by live music and dancing, kids’ crafts, temporary tatoos, City Hall tours, displays, give-aways and more. Free family fun for all ages!
Canada Day at the Edmonton Valley Zoo
Time: 11am to 4pm
Celebrate Canada Day and the Edmonton Valley Zoo’s 54th birthday! Visit the Canadian animals, eat a red and white cupcake, celebrate Lucy's birthday and enjoy a wonderful mix of family activities and entertainment. Regular admission rates apply.
Canada Day at the Muttart Conservatory
Time: Noon to 4pm
Celebrate our nation’s birthday with a visit to the Muttart Conservatory. Enjoy live music from the Cosmopolitan Music Society, Canada Day crafts, patriotic face painting and much more. Search the pyramids for Canadian symbols and enjoy a Canada Day treat. Regular admission rates apply.
Dominion Day at Fort Edmonton Park
Time: 10am to 6pm
Join the park-wide celebration of Dominion Day. Visitors will be treated to a parade and a delicious slice of free cake (while supplies last) inside Blatchford Field Air Hangar. Throughout the day, music, games, and historical vignettes will add to the ambience of the park. Avoid the line ups; visit Fort Edmonton Park to buy your tickets online.
Cool Off on Canada Day
Spend time soaking up the summer at a City of Edmonton outdoor pool or visit one of the City’s Recreation Centres. Regular admission rates apply. Holiday hours in effect. Splash away the day at one of the City’s free Water Play Features (spray parks).

Celebrate Canada Day in the heart of downtown Edmonton with two free events:
Boyle Street Community League BBQ
Time: Noon to 2pm
Come to the Boyle Street Plaza (9538-103A Ave.) for a free BBQ celebration and check out the beautiful new building that houses the Boyle Street Community League. Halal food will be available.
Heritage Chinatown Night Market
Time: 4 to 9pm
Celebrate Canada Day on Harbin Road (in front of the Chinatown Multicultural Centre, 9540-102 Ave.) with traditional entertainment, arts and gift sales, and food trucks. Entertainment will move indoors to the Multicultural Centre in bad weather, but the market tents and food trucks will be outdoors rain or shine. (Please note that 102 Ave. will be closed to vehicles between 95 St. and 96 St. during this time.)
Canada Day at Borden Park
Time: Noon to 4pm
Location: 7507 Borden Park Road (across from The Northlands Spectrum)
Join Councillor Tony Caterina and MLA Peter Sandhu for the annual North Edmonton Canada Day Celebration at Borden Park. Enjoy a fun-filled afternoon with free hotdogs, pop, cake, live entertainment and a variety of activities for the whole family.
Canada Day at the Alberta Legislature
Time: 7am to 7pm
Celebrate our nation’s birthday at the Alberta Legislature with live entertainment and a variety of free family activities.
Celebrate Canada Day at the Art Gallery of Alberta
Time: 11am to 5pm

ETS Canada Day Service
On Monday July 1, 2013 all ETS bus routes will operate on their regular Sunday schedules throughout the day. The LRT will operate on a 10 minute frequency after 9am. Regular Transit fares apply. Please note that LRT service over the Menzies Bridge may be suspended during the fireworks depending on weather and wind conditions (trains will hold at stations). Special Fireworks Service
Extra late night service from transit centres at West Edmonton Mall (along Route 1), Northgate (along Route 9), Mill Woods (along Route 8), Westmount (along Route 5) and Southgate (along Route 9) has been added to provide service before and after the fireworks display. Service will begin at approximately 8pm. Following the fireworks, buses will depart from downtown, Southgate and Coliseum areas. There will be increased LRT service to and from the fireworks.
The ETS Customer Services Centre, including Lost & Found and Commendations & Concerns, will be closed on July 1, 2013. For travel details, call BusLink at 780-496-1600, text 31100, check www.takeETS.com, or call 311.
The DATS Customer Care Centre will be closed on Canada Day. All subscription bookings will be cancelled on Monday July 1, 2013. If you need assistance on Canada Day while the Customer Care Centre is closed, please call DATS at 780-496-4567, Option 1.
