February 21, 2012

Edmonton firefighters will make the roof of the Downtown Fire Station (Station 2) their home February 21-24, 2012 to raise awareness and money for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Edmonton firefighters have raised $300,000 through their rooftop campouts and exceeded their goal of $60,000 last year by reaching $67,054.81 by the end of the event. Their success has motivated firefighters in communities across Canada, including Strathcona County, Leduc, St. Albert and Spruce Grove, to host their own rooftop campouts.

In the prairie region, the 2012 Rooftop Campout campaign begins February 21 and runs until March 31.

Muscular dystrophy is the name given to a group of over 100 types of neuromuscular disorders characterized by the wasting away and progressive weakness of the voluntary muscles that control voluntary movement. Over time, people with neuromuscular disorders may lose the ability to walk, speak, and ultimately breathe. For some individuals, the disorder is fatal. There is currently no cure.
