Three-alarm Fire at Seniors Complex Claims One Life

One person has died as a result of a fire at a seniors complex in Edmonton’s west end.
Edmonton Fire Rescue responded to a three-alarm blaze at Canora Gardens at 101 Avenue and 151 Street at about 1:30pm on July 31, 2012.
About 100 people live the 98-room, four-storey building. Several residents were taken to hospital for treatment. All other residents were evacuated and have been accounted for.
GEF Seniors Housing, which manages Canora Gardens, is arranging for alternate accommodation for residents displaced as a result of the fire. People with questions about evacuees should contact GEF Housing at 780-482-6561.
The City of Edmonton’s Emergency Operations Centre coordinated emergency agencies that responded to the incident, including the City’s Emergency Social Services and Edmonton Transit.
The fire was brought under control at about 3pm. Fire Rescue is investigating the cause of the blaze.
