Residents Keep Existing Waste Services Rates

Edmonton residents provided feedback on options to modify rates
The City of Edmonton will maintain the existing rate structure for waste utility services, based on feedback received during the public consultation in April 2012.
The City heard from 2,087 residents who provided their opinions on specific rate structure options to reward low-volume waste households. Residents participated via online surveys, open houses, calls and emails to the 311 call centre and other City offices.
“The results show that the majority of the respondents preferred the current flat rate structure,” said Connie Boyce, Director of Community Relations, Waste Management Services for the City of Edmonton. “Also more than 68% are interested in learning about ways to reduce their own household waste.”
Based on public interest to further reduce waste, this fall the City will launch an education program to inform and encourage residents to participate in existing waste reduction initiatives such as grasscycling, backyard composting and reuse.
In 2000 and 2006 the City of Edmonton held public input reviews on volume-related fees. In these two instances, as in this recent public consultation, residents supported the current system.
