‘Keep it Light’ on Waste Collection Day
June 26, 2012
Heavy garbage bags and cans are unsafe for you and your collector
Peak growing season is here, which means more yard waste for the City’s waste collectors. The City of Edmonton is reminding residents to avoid setting out heavy bags and cans.
Garbage bags or cans must weigh less than 20 kg (44 lbs) or collectors will not pick them up. Every working day your collector picks up between 7,000 to 11,000 kg of waste – about the weight of 10 sub compact cars. That’s why it’s important to make sure each bag or can is manageable. If you find it difficult to carry, or you need to drag it to the curb, it’s probably too heavy.
Each bundle of brush or tree trimmings should also be below this limit, securely tied, and no longer than 1.2 m.
The greatest source of waste that collectors pick up each year is yard waste. The City encourages residents to reduce their waste by grasscycling. Leaving clippings on the lawn while mowing promotes healthy lawns and requires less time and effort.
