City Suspends Bar Licence After Shooting

August 24, 2012

The City of Edmonton is exercising its emergency powers under the Municipal Government Act to immediately suspend the business license of Clareview Pub Inc operating as Chrome Lounge, located at 104, 550 Clareview Road for 10 days.

The bar owners were informed of the decision by the City in a letter delivered on Friday, August 24, 2012.

The City is using these emergency powers according to Section 551(1) of the Municipal Government Act which states that “…in an emergency a municipality may take whatever actions or measures are necessary to eliminate the emergency … emergency includes a situation in which there is imminent danger to public safety….”

Edmonton Police Service (EPS) responded to a weapons complaint in northeast Edmonton early morning on August, 24, 2012. Two victims suffered non-life-threatening gunshot injuries. EPS is investigating and have determined that the shooting took place inside a nearby bar during an altercation between patrons.

The Public Safety Compliance Team has provided the City with information that outlines the existence of imminent danger to the public as a result of the shooting.

“This recent escalation of dangerous occurrences, the serious harm to patrons, the unknown nature of responsible parties, the unknown motives behind the shooting and the ongoing investigation demand the City take steps to eliminate an emergency situation,” says the letter to the owners.

The City will not be commenting further on the suspension.
