Edmonton Prepared For Swine Influenza
April 28, 2009
Edmonton’s pandemic plan will be implemented if the swine influenza reported in Mexico, the U.S. and other parts of Canada poses a serious risk to the health of Albertans.
“The City of Edmonton is closely monitoring the outbreak,” said Bob Black, director of the office of Emergency Preparedness. “We are prepared to put our plan into motion if needed.”
“We are working with Alberta Health Services, which is monitoring for influenza activity related to the strain reported in Mexico,” said Black. “We will support Alberta Health in managing the disease.”
The City of Edmonton’s pandemic plan was last tested in 2007. Black said the plan ensures that essential services like police and fire are available in the event of a serious outbreak of swine influenza.
The City will ensure that the health and safety of City of Edmonton employees and their families are looked after if there is a pandemic.
Anyone with a cough or fever with recent travel to Mexico or the southern U.S. can call HealthLink Alberta: 780-408-LINK (5465) or toll free 1-866-408-LINK.
Citizens are reminded to take precautions to stop the spread of infection:
- Frequently wash hands with soap and warm water, especially after coughing or sneezing
- Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth after touching door handles and other surfaces that may harbour influenza and other viruses
- Stay home from work and avoid public places when ill
