Voting on Election Day

Arriving at the Voting Station

At the voting station, you will be asked to provide identification confirming your age and identity and to complete a Voting Register to confirm you are eligible to vote. You will also be asked if you are a resident of the Public or Catholic Separate School District. Each ballot indicates the candidates for only one School District. The Deputy Returning Officer will give you the appropriate ballot in a "secrecy sleeve" (envelope) that hides the names of the candidates.

Marking the Ballot

You will take the ballot into the voting booth, remove the ballot from the secrecy sleeve and mark the ballot beside the name of the candidates whom you wish to vote.

Voters choose:

  • 1 candidate for Chief Elected Official (Mayor),
  • 1 candidate in their ward for Councillor,
  • 1 candidate running in their ward for School District Trustee, and
  • a selection as outlined, for any public issue question (if applicable).

Directions will also be printed on the ballot. Only one person is allowed inside the voting booth at one time, except in special cases.

After the Ballot is Marked

You will return the marked ballot, inside the secrecy sleeve, to the Tabulator Clerk. The Tabulator Clerk will insert the ballot into the voting machine without looking at it.   It is very important that each person's vote remains secret.

If you choose too many candidates, the ballot will be returned by the voting machine and you will be given the option of either completing a new ballot or having the existing ballot accepted by the machine. Where votes have been cast for too many candidates, votes will not be counted. All other votes on the ballot will be accepted.

Closing the Voting Station

At 8 p.m. the voting station is closed. Any voters in the voting station or in line at 8 p. m. will be permitted to vote. Once all voting is complete, voters will be asked to leave the voting station. Candidates or their agents may remain to witness the printing of the results tape and clean-up procedures.

Declaring a Winner

Unofficial results will be displayed on the City's website. Official results will be posted Friday after the election.  The Office of the City Clerk prepares a document stating all the votes cast for each candidate and declaring which candidates have won each race. The official results will be posted on the City's website and can also be viewed at:
