Moving on Housing
Action on social housing
Safe and affordable housing is a key ingredient in the health, well-being and economic prosperity of any community. Across the country, municipalities continue to face a variety of social housing challenges including low rental vacancies, lack of affordable housing units and expiring federal funding programs.
In 2014, Mayor Iveson formed the Social Housing Regeneration Advisory Group to continue the conversations around emerging housing issues in Edmonton. Their summary report provides an important snapshot of the Edmonton housing market along with key recommendations for social housing redevelopment and regeneration.
The efforts of the Advisory Group are greatly appreciated, and will help the City of Edmonton, not-for-profit organizations and community groups better focus their efforts in addressing these challenges.
Roundtable on Housing
The City of Edmonton convened a Roundtable on Housing with three dozen invited partners and stakeholders April 28, 2014.
Participants came together to outline their perspectives on the issues and challenges in the Edmonton housing market, and how their particular sector or client group is affected.
A key point of discussion was around the best way to engage with the federal government in developing a long-term national plan to address these issues and impacts.
