Edmonton Urban Aboriginal Accord Initiative Project (2005-2006)

The Accord Initiative

The Accord Initiative was created by the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Aboriginal Urban Affairs Committee in response to the needs and aspirations of Aboriginal Peoples residing in Edmonton. The project produced several historic documents and the first-of-its-kind Urban Aboriginal Accord

To continue on its journey of building good relations with Aboriginal people - in the spirit and intent of the Accord - the City established the permanent Aboriginal Relations Office.

In keeping with cultural traditions, the City of Edmonton acknowledges that the work of the Accord Initiative took place within traditional Treaty 6 territory.

The Edmonton Urban Aboriginal Community Dialogue Process

The Accord was the result of the Urban Aboriginal Community Dialogue Process, which began in October of 2005. The process was Aboriginal community-led, inclusive of all interested individuals and organizations, and guided by an Elder's Circle. It provided opportunities for Aboriginal people to voice their opinions and to identify their priorities. Community Leaders' Gatherings, Action Circles, and a Community Gathering were held as part of this process.

Elders Circle

Elders are held in high regard and are able to provide advice and knowledge that will benefit all Edmontonians, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal. The importance of Elder involvement was identified by the community, so the Elders Circle was formed to provide wisdom and advisement throughout the dialogue process.
