Community and Urban Form
Every Edmontonian belongs to several communities; these communities are at the core of what makes Edmonton unique. There are geographic communities, such as the City as a whole, its neighbourhoods, community leagues, apartment buildings; and there are communities of interest which can be based on ethnicity, age, gender, etc.
Communities are the foundation of Edmontonians' lives. Strong, thriving communities play a key role in building an attractive, vibrant city.
- Edmontonians have shared their vision for community and a core theme is physical and social connectedness.
- The ability of Edmonton's residents to actively participate in decisions the City makes plays a key role in enhancing connectedness and fostering inclusion.
- Edmontonians want livable, compact, and complete communities where most everything they need and want is located close by and the things that are not close are easily accessible by public transportation.
- They want less urban sprawl and greater density.
- Edmontonians want to be connected by easy access to all parts of the City through better roadways, efficient and effective public transportation, and the ability to use various forms of active transportation, such as walking and biking.
- They believe development should focus on the community, ensuring business and industry are easily accessible and that each community includes a variety of housing types, including low-cost housing. There is also strong support for Transit Oriented Development.
