Storm Warning: Assuring Water & Climate Security in Alberta Bob Sandford More erratic weather and an increase in the frequency and intensity of floods in Canada are worldwide evidence of the fact that changing land-use and warming temperatures are energizing the global hydrological cycle. Changes in the rate and manner in which water moves through its cycle have begun to alter precipitation and other baseline hydro-climatic patterns in Alberta and throughout Canada. By paying close attention to water, however, we can anticipate and adapt to the effects a changing climate will have on our cities, agriculture and our way of life now and in the future. Bob Sandford is the EPCOR Chair of the Canadian Partnership Initiative in the Support of the United Nations Water for Life Decade. Besides being involved in many initiatives across Canada, Bob is also a member of the prestigious Rosenberg International Forum on Water Policy and senior policy advisor for the Interaction Council, a forum of more than 30 former heads of state, including Jean Chretien, Bill Clinton and Gro Brundtland, that in 2011 committed to addressing the growing global water crisis. The City of Edmonton worked with Edmontonians to update its environmental strategic plan (The Way We Green).
Through this process, we learned about the environmental challenges we may face as Edmonton grows, especially those related to water, air, fossil fuel, minerals and soil, climate, renewable resources, ecosystem services and waste absorption.
The Way We Green project is the City's consultation with Edmontonians to develop a long-term environmental strategy for a sustainable community.
The Way We Green is part of the Transforming Edmonton process.
Components of this project include:
- Expert discussion papers that explore the environmental sustainability challenges facing Edmonton.
- Videos featuring local, national and international experts and opinion leaders.
- Reports and surveys from stakeholders and the public.
- Up-to-date information on the project.
- Information and policy advice from the City's Expert Panel.
- Opportunity to comment on all positions on the public consultation website, which also compiles resources and related videos.
You can see the integrative plan diagram of the whole process.
Please visit this evolving site regularly and register for updates and event notices on our consultation site.
