Current Actions

• We are drafting our City Operations Greenhouse Gas Management Plan.
• The Green Building Policy was approved by City Council in 2012.
• We are replacing old street lights with LED technology.
• We have a Sustainable Building Policy that all new City-owned buildings and major renovations be designed and constructed to meet LEED Silver Standard as a minimum.
• Our Carbon Dioxide Reduction Edmonton (CO₂RE) program is aimed at helping homeowners reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency.

• We work to ensure that natural areas are protected, restored and managed.
• We have an Urban Parks Management Plan and an Urban Forest Management Plan.
• The Green Building Policy was approved by City Council in 2012.
• We are working on Brownfield Redevelopment.
• Our Ribbon of Green Concept Plan aims to establish publicly supported goals for the development and management of our river valley.
• We offer educational opportunities through the John Janzen Nature Centre and Edmonton Valley Zoo.

• We have programs encouraging residents to recycle, grasscycle and compost their waste.
• The Edmonton Waste Management Centre is North America's largest collection of modern, sustainable waste processing and research facilities.

Goal

• Water quality in the North Saskatchewan River sustains healthy people and ecosystems.

Current Actions

• We are involved with the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance.
• We treat and manage biosolids from wastewater so that they can be used as a fertilizer and soil amendment.
• Wherever possible, natural landscape features that contribute to the natural water cycle are preserved and incorporated into urban design using low impact development.
• We work closely with EPCOR to continually improve water treatment at the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant.

• We continue to build upon Enviso, our ISO 14001 environmental management system.
• We continue to educate our employees to understand, value and apply the principles of sustainability and resilience through various employee programs and our internal Green Team.
• We have a Sustainable Purchasing Policy that encourages staff to consider key environmental and social benefits over the entire lifecycle of the product/service when making purchases.
• We continue to educate and provide opportunities for residents to green their lifestyles and reduce their carbon footprint.
