Transportation Operations

Branch Mandate

Transportation Operations is responsible for the daily operation of Edmonton's road network. It ensures that thousands of pedestrians, motorists and cyclists can move safely and efficiently in the city.

Branch Services

Roadway Maintenance
Road maintenance services include winter road maintenance (snow clearing), spring clean up, summer road maintenance (potholes, patch paving, sidewalk repair), street sweeping, pavement management and bridge maintenance.

Engineering Services
Engineering Services is responsible for materials research and testing, quality assurance, pavement structural design and analysis, construction survey services, geotechnical engineering, landslide monitoring and repair, and erosion control.

This group also oversees environmental management, noise and vibration monitoring, and aggregate recycling.

Traffic Engineering
Traffic Engineering designs traffic signal systems to optimize traffic flow for all road users with emphasis on transit and goods movement. This section addresses traffic safety by assessing required upgrades for traffic control, and identifying engineering improvements at intersections.

Signals, Street Lighting and Infrastructure
This section of Transportation Operations manages Edmonton's traffic signals and street lights, including maintenance agreements with EPCOR. They develop rehabilitation programs for arterial roadways, neighbourhoods and street lighting and coordinate this work with utilities.

The Traffic Management Centre operates traffic signals, traffic cameras, message signs, and other technology to move traffic efficiently throughout the City.

Traffic Control
This group oversees road rights of way for traffic control and maintains traffic signing and on street control, including detours for construction projects, on street construction permits, access agreements and permit approvals to authorize utility installations.

Traffic Control also manages on street parking, including the bylaws regarding meters, traffic and speed. They authorize private uses of municipal rights of way and initiate removal of unauthorized or undesirable private use of municipal property.

The Office of Traffic Safety
The Office of Traffic Safety works to reduce the frequency and severity of traffic collisions on Edmonton's roads by analysing collision data and working with Edmonton Police Services on education, engineering and enforcement programs. These programs include community safety programs, speed management initiatives, photo enforcement and red light/intersection safety camera programs.
