Task Force for the Elimination of Poverty in Edmonton

The EndPovertyEdmonton was formally launched on September 18, 2015 with a public release of the

EndPovertyEdmonton Strategy. This bold document articulates a suite of priority actions from policy initiatives, program and services enhancements to community-based initiatives to end poverty within a generation.

In March 2014, Mayor Don Iveson invited 18 community leaders to be a part of a Task Force with an ambitious goal: to end poverty in Edmonton in a generation.

The Task Force’s work has become endpoverty edmonton—endpovertyyeg on social media. It’s a city-wide effort involving Edmontonians, businesses, and organizations who share a vision: to build on work already underway with the Government of Alberta and other agencies to find innovative solutions to poverty; to ensure that all Edmontonians achieve their full potential.

The City of Edmonton will support the Mayor’s Task Force, the 7 Working Groups, the Aboriginal Roundtable, and the Information and Research Roundtable, in developing a 10-year action plan by late 2015 which includes:

Information on the nature, extent and causes of poverty within the Edmonton Region
A concrete plan for eliminating poverty in Edmonton within a generation
Recommendations to Council on how to implement the plan

Aboriginal Round Table meetings

The Round Table works with the Task Force to inform and shape the plan to eliminate poverty that incorporates the impact of poverty on Aboriginal populations and builds on the values of the Aboriginal community.

Primary Task: To bring forward issues, insights, and recommendations related to Aboriginal Edmontonians and poverty to the Task Force.

Information & Research Round Table meetings

The Round Table supports the Task Force by providing and synthesizing current and leading edge information to shape the plan. It may also provide expert guidance to the Task Force to develop a screening and review process for the development of the final plan and recommendations for implementation.

Primary Task: To provide relevant and current synthesized data, best practices, and leading ideas and frameworks to the Task Force.
