REACH Report
REACH Edmonton Council for Safe Communities
REACH Edmonton held its inaugural meeting on June 22, ratifying a board of directors and meeting with its founding members.
REACH Edmonton Council for Safe Communities is a non-profit society that seeks out the best ideas and practices to "build a culture of community safety in one generation." It is member-based and places priority on a crime prevention strategy addressing the root causes of crime by investing in prevention.
"We are so thrilled to have such an exceptional group of individuals serving as the first board of this innovative organization. We are excited to begin working with our new board, our members, and all Edmontonians, to develop and implement ways to make Edmonton a safer community for all."
- Kate Gunn, Interim Executive Director
New Leadership
The recommendation to create a new coordinating council for community originated in the REACH Report, unanimously endorsed by Edmonton City Council in September 2009. The REACH Report aimed at creating a culture of community safety within one generation in Edmonton, and called for an overarching coordinating body to provide new leadership and catalyze this change.
Within this framework of innovative, preventive and evidence based efforts to build a safe community, a Transitional Board, composed of citizens and representatives from various agencies and levels of government, has begun the implementation of the REACH Report recommendations. Through its efforts, a new REACH Edmonton council is taking shape as a hub or centre of excellence that inspires citizen engagement, connects community partners and provides learning opportunities, resources and best practice information on community safety.
REACH Edmonton, as it is called, will take the community safety agenda to the next level, building on a twenty year legacy of collaborative and leading edge approaches to community safety championed by Safer Cities and, most recently, Safedmonton Advisory Committee. The vision of REACH Edmonton is a city in which all citizens contribute to a healthy community where they are safe and feel safe.
