Week in Review - September 25, 2015
September 25, 2015
Mayor Iveson began the week on Sunday evening listening to rock 'n' roll legends AC/DC absolutely rock 55,000 fans at Commonwealth Stadium. The Mayor was joined at the concert by Premier Rachel Notley. As you can see from the photo, they both enjoyed the show.
On Tuesday, the End Poverty Edmonton Task Force presented its strategy to eliminate poverty in a generation to City Council. Mayor Iveson posted on his blog the important work of this Task Force and how this is only the beginning of a new movement to tackle this inequality in our city. City Council accepted the report and there will now be consultation performed with the community, leading to the creation of an implementation plan to be presented to City Council in the spring.
Tuesday also saw a discussion on proposed amendments to the Vehicle-for-Hire bylaw at City Council. The meeting ended with Council passing motions to have Administration come up with a revised bylaw that would allow for the creation of a new license class for Transportation Network Companies, like Uber. Council is also looking for more consultation with interested parties, as stated in a Facebook post on Mayor Iveson’s Facebook page. Also of note, Mayor Iveson recently spoke with Mayor John Tory of Toronto on working together on policies that address private transportation operators, like Uber, as both cities examine the safety component of these new transportation entrants.
On a lighter note, Mayor Iveson lent his support this week to the Manners Movement. The Mayor was interviewed by Bryce Kelley from SONiC 102.9 FM Radio on how a little manners can go a long way.

The Mayor changed scenes on Thursday, touching down in Toronto for a meeting with the Big City Mayor’s Caucus to discuss a complex issue that is facing all major cities in Canada - affordable housing. All of the Mayors came together and called upon parties running in the current federal election campaign to make commitments on affordable housing as a key economic issue facing Canadians.

Back in Edmonton, the Mayor was on hand at the Edmonton International Airport on Friday morning for the official launch of Air China Cargo’s flight service to the Edmonton Metropolitan region. This service now provides Edmonton’s business community with another link to the Asia-Pacific and expands our reach as a hub for western Canadian commerce.

This wraps up another week for the Mayor and his staff! Don’t forget to come downtown on Saturday night for Nuit Blanche, a free late-night showcase of contemporary art that is sure to amaze and intrigue you. Have a wonderful weekend!
