Week in Review - September 11, 2015
September 11, 2015
The biggest news to come out of City Hall this week was City Council’s decision to relieve Simon Farbrother of his duties as City Manager. Mayor Iveson made the announcement on Thursday with a statement.
Earlier in the week, the Mayor had the opportunity to bring greetings at the Tour of Alberta, Canada’s first and highest ranked professional road cycling stage race. The final stage of the race was held in Edmonton on Labour Day Monday, where the Mayor presented a Leo Arcand soapstone carving to first place Stage 6 finisher Nikias Arndt of Germany.

Released this week, The Mayor Reads’ latest video installment was out just in time for the first day of school. The video has the Mayor reading “I Know Here,” a story about moving to a new place and starting out in a new school. Make sure to have a view and maybe show to your young ones.
On Tuesday, the Mayor spoke at the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) luncheon where he highlighted the positive long-term outlook for our City, even in the face of a national economic slowdown. The Mayor focused his speech on the need for more employers to look at downtown Edmonton as a place to headquarter, as employees start to see the positive quality-of-life factors increase for those living centrally.
This past Wednesday, City Council received an update on projected year-end financials and a capital financial update. Of note from the capital update, out of the 85 major capital project underway in Edmonton all are either on- or under- budget. Over 90% are also on schedule. This shows that the vast majority of public infrastructure projects in our City are on a positive trajectory. During this update the Mayor asked how project risks will be identified and communicated. Administration assured Council that all risks are assessed and monitored, with problems escalated. Any major problems are to be escalated all the way to City Council.
Federal politicians on the campaign trail also made their way to Edmonton this past week, with the Mayor having brief meetings with Liberal leader Justin Trudeau and NDP leader Thomas Mulcair. The Mayor met with Mr. Trudeau on Wednesday and with Mr. Mulcair on Friday, with an open invitation to other party leaders to discuss the major issues facing our City.
Rounding out the week, the Mayor had a busy Friday out in the community. First on the block was attending The Support Network’s Crisis Support Centre Breakfast at the Westin Hotel. The Mayor was on hand to speak and show support in the battle against the stigma that surrounds suicide. The organizers of the breakfast applauded members of City Council for their efforts to prevent acts of suicide by installing barriers at the High Level Bridge. Later in the morning, Mayor Iveson attended the annual Edmonton Firefighters Memorial service at the Connaught Armoury. The Mayor laid a wreath on behalf of the City and spoke of the brave men and women who we have recently lost in the line of duty.

On a more celebratory note, the Mayor was in Mill Woods on Friday to open the newly built Mill Woods Seniors & Multicultural Centre. In partnership between the City and the Province, the Centre was built as a hub for the multicultural, non-profit and seniors population. The Centre will feature over 23,500 square feet of space, including a large multi-purpose program space, three program rooms, a games room and full kitchen and dining area. A wonderful new addition to the top of the new Mill Woods Public Library.
Thank you for taking the time to skim through the Mayor’s week and have a glimpse into what goes on in City Hall. From the Mayor’s Office, have a sunny and pleasant weekend!
