Mayor Don Iveson with Mayor Nenshi Premier Notley and Minister of MA

November 20, 2015

Last Saturday night, Mayor Iveson and Santa Claus took part in the annual Christmas on the Square Holiday Light Up event in Churchill Square. Christmas lights are now shining brightly around City Hall and on the 72 foot white spruce Christmas tree in front of Churchill Square. Come check it out!

Tuesday’s City Council meeting focused heavily on the proposed Vehicle-for-Hire bylaw. The bylaw would make Edmonton one of the first Canadian cities to allow private transportation providers, like Uber, to operate on our streets. The bylaw received first reading and was then referred back to administration for further work on some outstanding issues, like the licence fee structure and the need to take into consideration the part-time and temporary nature of many private transportation operators.

“A balance needs to be struck between the fees private vehicle-for-hire operators pay and what a minimum pricing model could look like. The Mayor has suggested that the aim should be to provide the taxi industry with more flexibility to set their own pricing, something that will be explored this spring during engagement with the industry.” - Posted on Mayor Iveson’s Facebook Page

The draft bylaw is due to come back to City Council on January 26, 2016 for further discussion and debate and possible second and third reading.

On Wednesday. Mayor Iveson and Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi took part in the province-wide Alberta at Noon CBC radio phone-in show. The Mayors talked about a number of topics including Syrian refugees, Uber, public transit and the City of Edmonton's Neighbourhood Renewal program.

Later on Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Iveson and Mayor Nenshi met with Premier Rachel Notley and Municipal Affairs Minister Danielle Larivee to discuss the Big City Charter and opportunities for partnership around key areas like affordable housing, policing and public transit. Both Mayors accepted an invitation from the Premier to meet with the entire Cabinet in January to talk about the cities’ priorities and re-enforce the need for a cross-Ministry approach to the City Charter work.

Thursday night was a special occasion in neighbourliness. Mayor Iveson left the city limits and had a dinner meeting with Chief Billy Morin and the Enoch Cree Nation Council. This was the Mayor’s first official visit with the newly-elected Chief and Council and it provided an opportunity to discuss issues of mutual interest for the two neighbouring communities. The Mayor was honoured to receive several gifts from the Chief, which included a pair of mukluks and a beaded Oilers medallion.

The Edmonton Eskimos are set to play the Calgary Stampeders this Sunday afternoon in the CFL's Western Final at Commonwealth Stadium. Mayor Iveson will be at the game to cheer on the green and gold. #YouIn?

As you can see, the Mayor’s Office staff are excited for this weekend’s big game.

Finally, on Saturday November 21st, join the Mayor for the inaugural Santa's Parade of Lights. The 1.75-kilometer parade begins at 4:30pm at Jasper Avenue and 99th Street. We hope to see you there! From the Mayor’s Office, have a wonderful weekend.
