Week in Review - November 13, 2015
November 13, 2015
Mayor Iveson began the week with his monthly Mayor's phone-in show on CBC Radio where he took the opportunity to talk to Mark Connolly about City Council's upcoming budget deliberations. Later that morning, Mayor Iveson took part in the unveiling of the Kinross Victoria Cross at City Hall. Private Cecil Kinross was a member of the 49th Edmonton Battalion during World War I. He received the Victoria Cross from King George V for the valour he displayed in the Battle of Passchendaele on October 30, 1917. The Kinross Victoria Cross is now proudly displayed in the Mayor's Office in City Hall.
At Monday’s Transportation Committee meeting, Mayor Iveson proposed that the City re-examine the funding formula for the Neighbourhood Renewal Program in order to help bring some tax relief to Edmontonians in the upcoming 2016-18 City Operating Budget. The program is scheduled to increase property taxes by 1.5% each year for the next three years; the Mayor’s proposal would be to suspend the dedicated tax required to fund this program and instead fund it through provincial grants, savings from other capital programs and from other revenue sources as they become available. The Mayor was clear in his latest blog post on the matter; he will do what he can to bring down the proposed 4.9% property tax hike citing the fact that Edmontonians telling him it is too much to bear at this time.
It is officially Rodeo Week in Edmonton. First, on Monday the Mayor proclaimed the start of week-long rodeo festivities. As you can see from the photo below the Mayor never misses an opportunity to sport a cowboy hat.
Tuesday evening saw the Mayor take part in the Canadian Finals Rodeo Night of Champions. This is the 42nd annual Canadian Finals Rodeo (CFR) to be held in Edmonton, and the city is proud to host the largest annual indoor rodeo in Canada. This year, 108 competitors will compete for national titles in seven major events and more than $1.5 million in prize money. Make sure to catch some of the toughest cowgirls and cowboys in the world as they compete for these top honours this weekend.
Thursday evening, Mayor Iveson joined Alberta Agriculture Minister Oneil Carlier and Northlands President and CEO Tim Reid at the opening of Farmfair International. For more than 40 years, Northlands has hosted Farmfair International, one of Canada's top agricultural shows, where thousands of guests come to the Edmonton EXPO Centre to show and sell top quality livestock.
For those interested in Edmonton’s Community Energy Transition Strategy and how residents can be leaders in building a sustainable city, there will be a one-day forum held on Saturday November 14 at the Shaw Conference Centre. There is still time to register for the Edmonton’s Community Energy Forum and hear Mayor Iveson give a keynote. Come and inspire local action in your city.
This wraps up yet another week in the Mayor’s Office. Thank you for reading and hopefully we will see you at CFR this weekend. Try to make sure to follow cowboy etiquette - do not wear your cowboy hat backwards and always say “yee-haw” at the end of each sentence. YEE-HAW!
