Week in Review - June 17, 2016
June 17, 2016
With tragic news coming out of Orlando last weekend, all flags at City of Edmonton buildings were lowered to half-mast and the High Level bridge was lit in rainbow colors. Honouring and mourning this significant loss for not only the LGBTQ+ community, but for everyone.

Last Friday an independent panel commissioned by nine Metro Edmonton-region mayors, including Mayor Don Iveson, released its report on how to ensure competitiveness in the region in the short and long-term. The report confirms what Mayor Iveson has been advocating for the past two years: meaningful regional collaboration is essential to global competitiveness and sustainable growth in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. The report and its recommendations, which is already receiving support and buy-in from the business community and local journalists, is one of the first steps towards tackling some of the long-standing issues that have held the region back.

This past Friday also allowed for the recognition of an important Indigenous role model and local hero: Alex Decoteau, the first Aboriginal police officer in Canada, former Olympian, and WWI soldier. Mayor Iveson spoke of Decoteau’s many accomplishments during the groundbreaking of the new Alex Decoteau Park, a much-needed downtown amenity to be located at the northwest corner of 105 Street and 102 Avenue.

Tuesday’s City Council meeting brought the city one step closer to establishing a Community Development Corporation (CDC), an arms-length entity that could fill housing market niches and create economic opportunities that improve social conditions for families living in poverty. With unanimous support, Council endorsed this idea and now begins the process of setting up this social enterprise. The CDC is a core recommendation of the End Poverty Edmonton work.
Lastly, our office wants to remind everyone to fill out their very, very, very important 2016 Federal Census. The federal census collects important information that helps determine where investments in public transit, infrastructure, housing, police and fire services are made. Thank you for helping us keep this data useful and accurate!
That is another week for the history books. From the Mayor’s Office, remember to keep on keepin’ on!
