Week in Review - June 10, 2016
June 10, 2016
Mayor Iveson had a whirlwind set of meetings with mayors from Canada’s biggest metropolitan centres this past week. The Big City Mayors’ Caucus (BCMC), in conjunction with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, held their 5-day gathering in the prairie city of Winnipeg - with issues such as replenishing affordable housing stocks and improving Indigenous relations topping the agenda. Emergent discussions on including all four orders of government (we are talking Federal, Provincial, Indigenous, and Municipal) were had, as it will take the collective effort of everyone to tackle complex issues like poverty and climate change.

The Mayor wasn’t finished bringing Edmonton to the fore. Following BCMC he joined Deron Bilous, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, in San Francisco on Monday and Tuesday at one of world’s premier gathering of biotechnology giants, innovators, and disruptors.
With over 1,100 biotechnology companies and public organizations represented at the 2016 BIO International Convention it was the perfect opportunity for Mayor Iveson to promote Edmonton as “Canada’s Health Innovation City”. The Mayor met with several leaders in the pharmaceutical and venture capital fields, speaking on how Edmonton has all the right conditions to grow and add to the 265+ complement of health companies in our city.

Wednesday was a very special and solemn day. June 8 was the one-year anniversary of the tragic death of Constable Dan Woodall, who gave his life protecting our community. The day was marked with a beautiful park dedication ceremony in Constable Woodall’s honour. A prominent sign emblazoned with his name was unveiled in South Terwillegar, with the Woodall family, Edmonton Police Service members, the Mayor, and public in attendance. Cst. Woodall will be remembered for the ultimate sacrifice he made and this gesture was a wonderful way to celebrate his legacy.
In the same vein of celebrating those who protect us, on Thursday the Mayor declared the very first “First Responders Day” during a noon-hour event in Churchill Square. All branches of emergency, protective and preventative services in our city were recognized for their daily heroic efforts. All work to make our streets and homes safer - a day to say thank you and shed light on their contributions is the least we could do.
On Monday Mayor Iveson will be in the CBC radio studio for his monthly call-in show, so make sure to tune in at 7:30am on your drive to work to hear what your fellow Edmontonians have on their mind.
That is a wrap for this week! From the Mayor’s Office, thanks for reading and remember to keep it classy.
