Week in Review - February 5, 2016
February 05, 2016
City Hall was alive with pageantry this past Friday, with the Mayor attending the graduation ceremony for the Edmonton Police Service’s No. 133 recruit training class. Mayor Iveson congratulated Edmonton’s 37 new protectors on graduating from EPS’ extensive training program and for taking on these roles as “agents of peace, agents of reconciliation” in our community.

Mayor Iveson began the week with his monthly Mayor's phone-in show on CBC Radio. The Mayor talked to guest host Trisha Estabrooks and a number of citizens who called in about Uber and the enforcement of the City's new Vehicle-for-Hire bylaw; cracking down on improperly placed campaign signs during the Ward 12 by-election; and what the Mayor is doing to address the issue of homelessness in our community.
The Mayor was out in the community this past week, on hand to help launch the Skills Society’s Citizen Action Lab. The lab is a think tank where organizations can come and discover innovative ways to connect people in order to solve complex problems. The Mayor spoke of Edmonton as a hub for social innovation and how we need more spaces like this - spaces where we can convene the community.
Tuesday’s Executive Committee agenda was dominated by two major items: defining river valley and ravine system top-of-bank development and the status of Edmonton’s film commissioner. The Committee decided to explore mechanisms for development in appropriate sites, while ensuring further preservation of the river valley system. As for the film commission discussion, the Committee requested arts groups and industry stakeholders in the city come together to identify a preferred model to replace the commission and better support Edmonton’s film industry.
The rest of the week had the Mayor in the nation’s capital for the Big City Mayors’ Caucus (BCMC) meeting. This gathering brings the voices of Canada’s largest municipalities directly to the federal government. Mayor Iveson had a hectic schedule: from sitting down with other mayors and the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs Carolyn Bennett to discuss the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action, to discussing infrastructure priorities with Minister Amarjeet Sohi.

Friday included the BCMC’s meeting with the Prime Minister, part of the new partnership being formed between federal and municipal orders of government. There is also the official handover of the Chair of BCMC from Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson to Mayor Iveson, who will take on duties representing BCMC after the summit has concluded.

Next week there are no Council or Committee meetings, but that does not mean there is no work to be done. Catch the Mayor on The Ryan Jespersen Show Monday morning at 10am or watch out for the Mayor at the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton’s ‘We Believe” benefit dinner on February 10. That wraps up this post for the week - make sure to check us out next Friday! From the Mayor’s Office, have a wonderful, warm weekend.
