Mayor Don Iveson and Chief Billy Morin unveil roadway name

February 12, 2016

Tuesday morning saw Mayor Iveson pop over to Good News Auto for a tour of their shop and to meet with some of their mechanics. This particular auto shop is unique in that all their profits go to their Jumpstart program, which is used to make vehicle repairs more affordable to Edmontonians. The mechanics also serve the public by taking time to educate the working poor on car maintenance and financial literacy.

This week also saw Mayor Iveson honoured with an eagle feather and a Cree name from local elder Gilman Cardinal, who is currently helping the City with its plans to end poverty in a generation. During the noon hour on Wednesday, Mr. Cardinal and a group of prominent urban Indigenous leaders came to City Hall to bestow these honours onto the Mayor in a private ceremony.

The eagle feather is a significant form of recognition to Indigenous peoples, given to those who have made major contributions to society. The Cree name the Mayor received is Napew Kanîkânohtêt (pronounced Napew-Ka-Neegan-Ohtete) which means “man who walks in front.” The Mayor was moved by these precious gifts and expressed his continued desire to lead Edmonton on a path towards reconciliation.

Later that night, the Mayor was on hand to bring greetings at the annual Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton’s ‘We Believe’ benefit dinner. Mayor Iveson highlighted the importance of dignity and showing respect to survivors of sexual violence. All in the spirit of getting the community to believe people who come forward with their stories.

At City Hall on Friday, the Mayor and Chief Billy Morin of Enoch Cree Nation made a significant announcement that highlighted a renewed relationship between Enoch and the City of Edmonton. They announced the renaming of a major roadway, 23rd Avenue between 215 Street and Anthony Henday, to Maskêkosihk Trail (pronounced ‘Muss-Kay-Go-See’). Maskêkosihk refers to the land location of Enoch Cree Nation and is a derivative of another word meaning "people of the land of medicine." Signage along this roadway will be changed to reflect the new name in the coming months and will also highlight Cree syllabic spelling.

This ends another week in the Mayor’s Office. Going into the long weekend, don’t forget to set aside time with that special someone on Valentine’s Day (Sunday) and then time with the whole family on Family Day (Monday). Next week brings a busy agenda for the Mayor at City Council meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, an Audit Committee discussion on transit service and bringing greetings to an APEGGA luncheon and the Alberta Chamber of Resources 80th anniversary banquet.
