Week in Review - December 11, 2015

Mayor Don Iveson presenting sculpture

December 11, 2015

Monday’s Special Executive Committee meeting focused primarily on infill and starting the review of the Mature Neighbourhood Overlay (MNO). Mayor Iveson invited the public to get involved in the review as it will examine how the MNO is applied, its strengths and weaknesses, and how it can become a more effective tool to support infill in mature neighbourhoods. Infill was also discussed, with the Executive Committee deciding to go forward with the MNO review in order to address residents’ concerns over subdivisions in their neighbourhoods. The committee passed a motion to have Administration look at how community character can be defined and addressed in different contexts throughout the land development process, to be returned to committee in mid-2016. Infill remains one of Council’s methods of addressing Edmonton’s 74,000 population decline in mature neighbourhoods in the last 40 years.

On a lighter note, the Mayor made a holiday-themed cameo appearance on the CBC TV show This Hour Has 22 Minutes on Tuesday night.

Tuesday also saw Mayor Iveson meet with leaders from several local agencies that are working to prepare for the arrival of Syrian refugees in our city. The leaders gave the Mayor an update on their work so far and will be working with the Mayor’s Office and the City of Edmonton to ensure our newest Edmontonians are properly welcomed and supported. The City has launched an online portal for those looking to show their support, provide donations or volunteer - make sure to check it out.

On Wednesday, Mayor Iveson took part in a public recognition event for Oilers patriarch Glen Sather. The Mayor proclaimed December 10, 2015 “Glen Sather Day in the City of Edmonton” in recognition of Mr. Sather's contribution to the city while he was the Coach and General Manager of the Edmonton Oilers. The Mayor also presented Mr. Sather with a beautiful bison sculpture made by local artist Slavo Cech. Made from raw steel, a material used in our local manufacturing sector, this art piece reflects the industriousness of the people of Edmonton.

Lots of proclaiming going on this week as the Mayor also proclaimed December 11, 2015 as “Manners Day in Edmonton”. Part of a SONiC 102.9 initiative to spread good manners throughout our fair city. Make sure to check out the video of the Mayor using his “proclamation voice,” all in the service of minding our P’s and Q’s.

For those looking to buy that special holiday gift for a loved one and support local business at the same time, check out the CASH MOB taking place for 124th Street businesses this Saturday. The Mayor and Councillor Scott McKeen will be there showing their support as well - keep an eye out! Free shuttle service provided by Edmonton Transit is available.

That wraps up another week in the Mayor’s Office. Hope everyone is on track with their holiday planning - we know how gift shopping procrastination can lead to some interesting last-minute surprises. Don’t be a Procrastinating Peter this holiday season.
