Committee Roundup, Canada Day Celebrations, and More FIFA Women’s World Cup
July 03, 2015
This week, the serious business of committee work was balanced with a whole lot of fun as Edmontonians again showed their national pride during Canada Day celebrations.
Monday’s Community Services Committee reviewed the first year report from WAVE (Women’s Advocacy Voice of Edmonton), a committee of exceptional local women dedicated to empowering Edmonton women in civic life. In its first year of operation, WAVE has laid the groundwork for future initiatives that will break down barriers so women can be more involved in civic leadership roles. Some of WAVE’s upcoming actions include hosting the inaugural Women’s Symposium on October 3, 2015 and working with Edmonton Transit on a campaign aimed at zero tolerance for sexual harassment.
Executive Committee approved important amendments to the River Crossing Vision on Monday. River Crossing, commonly known as the Rossdale development area, is located in the heart of Edmonton and is seen as a place of significance to many Edmonton residents. The updated vision now includes references that acknowledge the Aboriginal history attached to this area. One of the additions includes the following line that sums up the intended purpose of the River Crossing: "It is a special place that will honour and respect its indigenous past while creating a new community for us all.”
After two days of committee meetings the real fun started. Edmontonians and Mayor Iveson were out in force Wednesday to celebrate Canada Day. First was serving pancakes on the Alberta Legislature grounds for a breakfast hosted by the Edmonton Ismaili Muslim community. After putting his flapjack flipping skills to work, the Mayor welcomed new Canadians at a special citizenship ceremony on the grounds. The Mayor then made his way around the city bringing Canada Day greetings at City Hall, the Bait-ul-Hadi Mosque, the Westend Seniors Activity Centre, and the Chinese Benevolent Association.

Finishing off Canada Day, the Mayor grabbed a seat at Commonwealth Stadium and took in the FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final match between two powerhouse teams: England and Japan. Edmontonians continue to impress and Edmonton continues to impress as an international sport event host as another great crowd showed up to watch these two teams battle it out for a spot in the finals.

And that was the week of June 29 to July 3! Don’t forget to check out the last FIFA Women’s World Cup game in our city on Saturday July 4, tickets for the bronze medal game are still available.
Next week City Council meets on Tuesday July 7, from 9:30am to 5:30pm. Be on the lookout for scheduled discussions on District Energy in our downtown, a community energy distribution system that could help the city reduce its carbon footprint, and on municipal campaign finance reform. Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for reading!
