Mandate

IRO staff work to help the City of Edmonton continue on its journey of building good relations with Indigenous people - in the spirit and intent of the Edmonton Urban Aboriginal Accord.

The Indigenous Relations Office works to:

• Build and support good relations between the City of Edmonton, Indigenous people and organizations that serve Indigenous people.
• Increase Indigenous participation in the City of Edmonton workforce.
• Ensure City-mandated services address the needs of Indigenous people.
• Coordinate City participation in Indigenous community-led initiatives.
• Help the City of Edmonton fulfill the intentions of City Council's Aboriginal Declaration
• Provide leadership and support in the renewal of the Accord.
• Provide support to the Edmonton Urban Aboriginal Affairs Committee

Statistical Profile of Indigenous Peoples Living in Edmonton

Edmonton and surrounding area has the second largest urban Indigenous population in Canada - 52,100, or 5% of the population. (Statistics Canada, Aboriginal Peoples of Canada 2006 Census CD ROM publication).

This report was initiated by the Indigenous Relations Office to provide information about Edmonton's urban Indigenous residents and to support and influence organizations' and community decisions that affect the Indigenous community in Edmonton and surrounding area.

It contains information on basic demographic characteristics that are compared, wherever possible, to those of the non-Indigenous residents of Edmonton.

Edmonton Urban Aboriginal Dialogue Process took place in 2005 and resulted in the creation of the Urban Aboriginal Accord.
