Gas Permits - Residential
A gas permit is required when installing, altering or relocating natural gas equipment.
About the Service
A gas permit is required under the provincial Safety Codes Act when installing, altering or relocating gas equipment such as: furnaces, hotwater heaters, meters, piping and lines, dryers, BBQs, garage heaters, ranges, patio heaters, fireplaces, space heaters, and fire pits.
Line Types and Requirements
New Gas Line: Before a gas meter can be installed the new gas lines require an inspection with approval.- Primary Gas Line: A primary gas line cannot be located under an accessory building.
- Restoring Gas to a Meter: Before the gas service is restored to an existing gas line that has been shut off for six or more months, a re-test is required, which must be inspected and approved by a City inspector. A bonded and licensed contractor must be contacted first to assess the gas line.
Exceptions
A homeowner may not install a new gas line. Only a qualified contractor may do the work.A primary gas line can not be located under an accessory building.
A homeowner can only apply for a permit for re-testing of an existing gas system if they meet all the following criteria:
- the gas line is in a single family home
- the applicant lives in the home
- the applicant is the owner of the home
How Do I Obtain the Service?
For Homeowners
New home gas work must be completed by a licensed mechanical contractor. Homeowners of single family homes can only obtain gas permits for renovations and re-tests of an existing gas system. Homeowners who apply for their own gas permits must own and occupy the property and be completing the work themselves.
- Homeowner must apply for permits in person (address listed below)
- Complete the Single Family Homeowners Plumbing and Gas Application
- Include a detailed drawing with piping layout including fitting descriptions and sizing
- After the work has been completed you can book an inspection by calling 311.
A permit must be obtained prior to doing any work and booking an inspection.
For Contractors
Contractors must be licensed with the City of Edmonton.

- fax to 780-496-6054 or come to our offices (address listed below)
- After the work has been completed you can book an inspection by calling 311.

Contractors who have an online account may apply online for permits and inspections.
A permit must be obtained prior to doing the work and booking an inspection.
Inspection Information
After the work is completed an inspection of the equipment is required.
- All equipment that will be concealed must be inspected and approved before it is covered.
- If the work has not had an inspection but has been covered, the inspector has the authority to request the area to be opened for inspection.
Booking an Inspection
In occupied homes, the owner of the home should be phoning to book the inspection since they will be required to ensure that either themselves or another adult is there when the inspection occurs.
- Inspections can be booked by calling 311 or faxing our office. Please indicate the type of inspection that is required as well as permit holder's name and phone number and the address where the inspection needs to be done.
To prepare for the required inspections in occupied homes, please ensure:
- an individual 18 years of age or older who is responsible for the property is present during the inspection
- clear and unobstructed access to all areas of inspection is provided
- all pets are securely contained
Please note: the Safety Codes Officers are required to wear shoes while performing their duties in your home.
Extra Inspections
A fee of $245 shall be assessed for every inspection requested where any of the following items are found to be deficient:
- No address on site, building, or suite as applicable
- Inspector unable to access the building, having been called to inspect
- Project not ready for inspection, when inspector has been called to do an inspection
- Inspection called for where previously identified deficiency has not been corrected.

Fees
For Single Detached Homes:
- For new home construction:
Any new gas work being done for a new single family home, the permit fees are included in the 2016 House Combo Permit fees.
An additional $102 notification fee will be added to all house combo permits that are Class B or require a variance. - For existing home renovations: All residential permits issued outside of “House Combo Permit” regardless of scope, the fee is $102 plus $4.50 safety code fee
For Semi-Detached and Duplexes:

Minimum fee of $158/unit or address
The safety codes fee is 4% of the permit cost, minimum $4.50 - maximum $560/permit.
For existing home renovations: $100, plus the $4.50 safety code fee.
Note: These fees apply for commercial and industrial buildings and are for each individual unit in a multi-family dwelling.
