The Vehicle for Hire Bylaw states that vehicles for hire must be licensed. Plates and/or stickers are issued to vehicles on a yearly basis, expiring annually on April 30.
There are four types of vehicle for hire licences:
- Taxi licence plate
- Accessible taxi licence plate
- Limousines licence plate
- Shuttle licence plate
Association with Dispatch Services
All vehicles for hire must be associated with a company or individual that has a valid business licence to operate a dispatch service.

| Annual Accessible Administration Fee (only applies to taxi plate and accessible taxi plate licences) |

| Late Renewal Fees (taxi plate and accessible taxi plate licences only) This fee is charged if the taxi or accessible taxi licence plate is renewed between May 31 and June 30. Any licence not renewed by June 30 is cancelled and returned to the City. |

| Vehicle Licence Plate Replacement Applicant must bring either the old plate, or a copy of a police report indicating it has been stolen, to our office. This also applies to a Vehicle Licence Plate Replacement and Sticker Replacement (if both items are requested at the same time) |

Plate Replacement
If the plates are damaged, lost or stolen:
- File a police report
- Provide a copy of the police report to the City of Edmonton
- Bring damaged plates along when apply for new new plate
- Sign a statutory declaration when you apply for the new plate
Substitute Vehicles
If a new or substitute vehicle is purchased to operate under an existing taxi plate, the plate owners must provide:
- Bill of Sale for the vehicle
- Vehicle Registration
- Valid Insurance
- Mechanical Inspection (must be done every 6 months; if inspection will expire within 2 months of application, the applicant will be required to provide a new inspection)
- Meter Accuracy
