Vehicle Decals and Markings

The City will continue to uphold and enforce public safety standards as stipulated in the bylaw and encourages all companies entering and participating in the vehicle for hire market to comply.

Drivers will be required to provide the City with proof of the proper insurance and class of driver’s licence (1, 2, or 4) as outlined by provincial law. Currently the only acceptable insurance is a valid commercial policy.

Police Information Checks will also be required for all drivers, which corresponds with the amendments being made to provincial regulations. A Police Information Check must be from the municipality of residence.

In addition, all vehicles must pass an annual mechanical inspection by a properly licensed garage and mechanic.

Fines for operating without a City driver’s licence or City vehicle licence under the new bylaw are $5,000, and regular enforcement of unlicensed vehicles for hire continues.

Because licensed PTPs and taxis are subject to significant scrutiny by the City, they are considerably safer than non-regulated services like bandit vehicles.

Legitimate, licensed vehicles in Edmonton will be easy to recognize because they will all have distinct markings.

Commercial Private Transportation Providers drivers will place a sticker with the trademark symbol of the PTP dispatcher onto the passenger side lower corner of the front windshield of the vehicle. This sticker will be provided to the drivers by the commercial PTP dispatcher.

Regional Private Transportation Providers

Regional Private Transportation Providers drivers will be issued a sticker to be placed directly on the front windshield in the lower corner on the passenger side of the vehicle. This sticker is approximately 2 inches x 2 inches and is similar to stickers currently used by enforcement officers to indicate that vehicles have been visually inspected.

Recognizing Bandit Vehicles

Bandit vehicles are vehicles operating as taxis, without a valid licence. They are often uninsured, unsafe and the driver has not been screened by the City. That is why it is important to always make sure your cab isn’t a bandit!

In addition to checking that there is a clearly displayed taxi plate on the vehicle, make sure the features listed below are visible.
