Note: The City will no longer issue specific types of driver’s licences (taxi, limousine, shuttle) and Class A and Class B taxi driver’s licences.

All drivers must provide:

• completed application form
• Fees $60/year or $100/two years
• Class 1, 2, or 4 provincial operator’s licence
• Police Information Check no older than 90 days from Edmonton Police Service
• photograph (to be taken at the time of application or supplied by the applicant)
• To operate an accessible taxi, proof of an accessible taxi driver training program (to be noted on the driver’s licence)
• There is no requirement for English language test, abstract, or defensive driving course

Note: There is no longer a requirement for the taxi plate to be on the road for a minimum of 200 days.

A vehicle can only receive one type of vehicle licence.

An applicant for a vehicle licence must provide:

• a completed application form
• fee: $400/year
• valid provincial registration certificate
• proof that vehicle and all people driving are covered under a valid commercial insurance policy approved by the Province of Alberta
• proof of agreement with dispatch licensee to provide dispatch services for that vehicle

Mechanical inspections are required annually and records must be kept in the vehicle at all times.

There is a cap of 1,235 Taxi Vehicle licences, and they are transferrable. There is a cap of 95 Accessible Taxi Vehicle licences, and they are transferrable.

Dispatcher licence requirements

• Fees: $1000/year
• Completed application form
• Exclusive dispatcher does not have to pay a dispatch fee but is still subject to all dispatch obligations (records and data to be collected and available to the City)
• corporate documents or ownership documents

If application is for a corporation: Copies of Corporate Registry documents are required. These documents should also include the name of at least one individual who will be responsible for that corporation complying with all provisions of the Bylaw and Regulations.

Transfer details

Only taxi vehicle licences and accessible taxi vehicle licences can be transferred. The number of private transportation provider vehicles is not capped.

The person transferring the taxi licence or accessible taxi licence:

• completes a consent to transfer form authorized by the City Manager
• pays the fee outlined by the Vehicle for Hire Fees

Person receiving the taxi licence or accessible taxi licence must comply with requirements for issuance of vehicle licence in section 26 of the Vehicle for Hire Bylaw.

There is no requirement to have City driver’s licence to have plate transferred to you.

In the event of the death of a taxi or accessible taxi vehicle licensee, the vehicle licence may be transferred to another person within one year of the death of the licensee, upon the consent of the licensee's executor or administrator.
