Parking, Trailer & RV Storage
Definition of Recreational Vehicle
Any vehicle that is equipped for sleeping is considered a recreational vehicle. Large recreational vehicles include any motor home, travel trailer, fifth wheel trailer, camper not mounted on a truck, or any other vehicle or object, which the development officer deems to be a large recreational vehicle.
This does not include boats, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, jet skis or motorcycles (or trailers to carry them). It also does not include small utility trailers, camper van conversions, tent trailers or campers mounted on trucks.
Usability
Trailers or recreational vehicles on roadways or on public spaces can not be occupied with respect to using them as a temporary dwelling.
Street Parking
The traffic bylaw allows RV parking on the roadway immediately beside the owner or operator's residence and for no more than 72 consecutive hours. The unit must be attached to a vehicle. After 72 hours, the RV must be moved off the city street for at least 48 consecutive hours before it may be parked again on the roadway beside the owner or operator's residence.
Parking Time Limit
The time limit for parking any vehicle on a street is 72 consecutive hours. After 72 hours it can be considered an abandoned vehicle.Parking Not Allowable
Unattached trailers can not be parked on City streets at any time. This includes but is not limited to, tent trailers, travel trailers, fifth wheel trailers, boat trailers, utility trailers and campers not mounted on trucks.
Seasonal Distinction
Between April 1 and October 31, it is expected that you park your RV in your backyard, making sure that the vehicle doesn't hang over the lane or your neighbour's property. An RV may be parked on the front of a residence without a back lane provided that the vehicle is parked 2 metres (about 6 1/2 feet) back from the interior edge of the sidewalk or 2 metres back from the curb if there is no sidewalk, and the unit must be on a hard surface, not on grass.
During November 1 to March 31 the RV must be stored in the rear yard of the residential property or in a garage on a residence. If access to the rear yard or garage is not possible, RVs must be stored on a site approved for such storage.
Fines for improper parking of an RV or utility vehicle range from $210 to $400.
