The City of Edmonton’s Business Licence Bylaw outlines the following categories and regulations for the hospitality industry:

After Hours Dance Club

This category is described as "a facility with dancing to live or recorded music, including operation between the hours of 2am and 8am."

There are special regulations and application requirements for this category. Edmonton Fire Rescue and the Edmonton Police Service are asked for a recommendation, and Alberta Health Services is notified when an application is submitted for this type of business.

After Hours Dance Event

Dancing at an after hours eventThis category is described as "a commercial event with dancing to live or recorded music including operation between the hours of 2am and 8am that takes place other than in an After Hours Dance Club."

Applications for this category of licence must be submitted at least 30 days before the proposed event date.

There are special regulations and application requirements for this category. Edmonton Fire Rescue and the Edmonton Police Service are asked for a recommendation, and Alberta Health Services is notified when an application is submitted for this type of event.

Application Requirements

Applications must include:

  • If you are a corporation, you need to submit the full name, date of birth, and recent Edmonton Police Information Check for all primary managers, owners, partners, directors and officers of the corporation.
  • If you are an individual, you need to submit your full name, date of birth, and recent Edmonton Police Information Check.
  • A proposed noise control plan, patron management plan, safety/medical plan, and security plan for your event.
  • Details of your event, including the proposed date and time, the venue (please include a copy of the contract you have with the venue operator), number of people and staff you are expecting to attend, and the name of the individual who will be the event coordinator.
  • You may be required to leave a deposit with the City to cover the anticipated cost of providing public services to your event.

Alcohol Sales [Consumption Off-Premises]

This category is described as "selling alcoholic beverages for consumption off the premises; typical examples are liquor stores."

There are no special business licence regulations for this category, other than the need for a licence. However, there are special location restrictions under Edmonton's Zoning Bylaw that may affect the approval of your development permit which you must get before you can apply for a business licence. Edmonton Fire Rescue is asked for a recommendation, and Alberta Health Services and the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission are notified when an application is submitted for this category of business.

Alcohol Sales [Consumption On-Premises/Minors Allowed]

This category is described as "selling alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises in which minors are allowed in all areas of the premises during all hours of operation."

There are no special business licence regulations for this category, other than the need for a licence. Edmonton Fire Rescue is asked for a recommendation, and Alberta Health Services and the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission are notified when an application is submitted for this category of business.

Alcohol Sales [Consumption On-Premises/Minors Prohibited]

  • Comply with your approved noise control plan, patron management plan, safety/medical plan, and security plan.
  • Report any illegal activities to the Edmonton Police Service.
  • Refuse entry to or remove anyone who:
    • is behaving in a quarrelsome, riotous, or disorderly way.
    • is involved in illegal activities such as drug possession or trafficking.
    • has been removed from the premises repeatedly.
    • is identified by the Edmonton Police Service as, within the past three years, having been convicted of an indictable criminal offence.

Bars and Lounges

This licence category is no longer issued

This category was described as "selling alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises but without offering dancing to live or recorded music."

There are no special business licence regulations for this category, other than the need for a licence. If you are currently licensed as a Bar/Lounge, you will be required to find a new category for your business when your licence expires and new regulations will apply. Please read this notice or call 311 for more information.

Bed and Breakfast

This category is described as "providing accommodation within a private residence, not including the complete rental of such private residence."

There are no special business licence regulations for this category, other than the need for a licence. Alberta Health Services is notified when an application is submitted for this category of business.

Food Processing

There are no special business licence regulations for this category, other than the need for a licence. Edmonton Fire Rescue is asked for a recommendation and Alberta Health Services is notified when an application is submitted for this category of business.

Nightclub

This licence category is no longer issued

This category was described as "selling alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises and offering dancing to live or recorded music."

There are special business licence regulations for this category. If you are currently licensed as a Nightclub, you will be required to find a new category for your business when your licence expires and new regulations will apply. Please read this notice or call 311 for more information.

Regulations

Nightclubs must comply with your approved noise control plan until a new one is approved as part of your next business licence application.

Rental Accommodation

This category is described as "providing accommodation on a temporary or permanent basis."

There are no special business licence regulations for this category, other than the need for a licence. Edmonton Fire Rescue is asked for a recommendation and Alberta Health Services is notified when an application is submitted for this category of business.

Restaurant or Food Service

This category is described as "selling prepared food or non-alcoholic beverages for consumption on or off the premises."

There are no special business licence regulations for this category, other than the need for a licence. Edmonton Fire Rescue is asked for a recommendation and Alberta Health Services is notified when an application is submitted for this category of business.

Street Vending

If you are selling your product on a public street or other public space, you will require a street vending permit in addition to your business licence. These permits approve the location of your mobile business and make sure it is being operated safely.

Travelling or Temporary Food Sales

This category is described as "selling food or beverages place to place, or from a temporary location in any place where the public has an expected right of access, but not including sales to a wholesale or retail dealer in any such goods."

This business licence can be issued for either a full year or 1-3 days, depending on the length of time you will be operating in Edmonton.

There are no special business licence regulations for this category, other than the need for a licence and street vending permit (if you are operating on a public street or in a public space). Alberta Health Services is notified when an application is submitted for this category of business.
