Business Tax and Non-Residential Property Tax
The City of Edmonton is nearing the end of a four year phase-out of the Business Tax. This will affect businesses and most commercial properties, rental properties, and other non-residential properties.
As of 2011, there will be no more business tax levied in the City of Edmonton. This is the result of a 2007 decision by City Council that the business tax revenue requirement be shifted to the non-residential property class over a four year period (2008 to 2011).
This change will mean that rather than paying two kinds of taxes to the City – the business tax and property tax – non-residential properties and businesses will pay only one, the non-residential property tax.
During the four year phase out period (2008-2011) businesses will see a decrease in business taxes. This decrease in business taxes will be offset by an increase in non-residential property taxes.

Business Revitalization Zones (BRZ)
There are a number of BRZs throughout the city that work to support local business interests. A special levy is also applied to the business tax notices that support the activities of the Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) in these areas.
Business Tax Payments
You can pay your annual business taxes in a lump sum by March 31 each year. You also have the option to enroll in a monthly payment plan. This plan enables you to pay equal monthly installments by automatic bank withdrawal without incurring any penalties.
Unpaid Business Tax
Any business taxes remaining unpaid in 2011 will continue to incur penalties and the City will pursue collection activities to recover any uncollected revenue.
