Park and Open Spaces

Blatchford park with view to downtown skyline

The new central park at the heart of Blatchford will offer all Edmontonians a place to enjoy. The park will be a great destination to go for a run or a bike ride, to picnic with friends and family in the summer and to toboggan with them in the winter. With double the amount of space found in a standard development, the park will offer both residents and visitors a chance to connect to nature right in the centre of the city.

The approximately 49 hectares of parks and open spaces in the community will be easily accessible as the majority of residents will be within a two-minute walk of a green space.

Highlights of the park and green spaces

  • The park will include a variety of landscapes from open meadows to wetlands.
  • The east side of the stormwater ponds will be built with a boardwalk where people can get close to the water. This design feature will offer a unique gathering spot for people to enjoy the ponds. The west side of the stormwater ponds will be left more natural, giving people different scenery and options for outdoor recreation.
  • Smaller parks will be located throughout the community. These green spaces will have community gardens and could be a potential location for playgrounds and plazas.
  • Community gardens will create gathering spaces for neighbours to get to know one another while offering residents a chance to grow food right outside their front door.
  • Opportunities for year-round use will be created to ensure the park can be enjoyed every day of the year. Ideas being considered include bike trails, picnic areas, walking paths, cross-country skiing trails, skating and a toboggan hill.
  • A large hill at the north end of the site will act as a break from cold northwesterly winds, dampen noise from the nearby Yellowhead Trail, and offer a great vantage point to view Edmonton’s downtown skyline.

The first residents won’t have to wait long to start enjoying this great amenity. A section of the park and one of the ponds will be built at the same time the first homes are constructed.
