Designing Blatchford

New ways to build a community
Building sustainable communities has been done in a handful of developments around the world. Edmonton is expanding on the successes of these leading edge communities and will raise the bar worldwide for those communities that will follow in our footsteps.Blatchford will demonstrate, in a real and measured way, what a sustainable future will look like. The community will achieve all three levels of sustainable development, including social, environmental and economic outcomes.
Connecting to Edmonton's Future
Edmonton’s strategic plan, The Way Ahead, provides a clear vision of what Edmonton looks like in the future. The plan’s six strategic goals help align the City’s priorities as we work to make Edmonton the city we want it to become in 2040.
Blatchford is a major pillar in the implementation of The Way Ahead. It will serve as a model that can shape future development and change the way our city grows.
Blatchford’s vision aligns with the City’s six strategic goals by:- Increasing density and take advantage of existing infrastructure. It also will help nearby mature neighbourhoods remain strong and vibrant. (Transform Edmonton’s Urban Form)
- Offering area residents convenient LRT and transit service, and will promote other alternatives such as walking and cycling. (Shift Edmonton’s Transportation Modes)
- Reducing the ecological footprint of the community and its residents by being sustainable and resilient.
(Preserve and Sustain Edmonton’s Environment) - Encouraging residents to live active, healthy lifestyles, in a community that is safe and offers many recreational opportunities. It will also honour the site's strong aviation heritage. (Improve Edmonton’s Livability)
- Helping Edmonton diversify by promoting the growth of a vibrant, livable city, and by providing a dynamic environment that encourages innovation. It will also propel Edmonton’s image and reputation world-wide. (Diversify Edmonton’s Economy)
- Balancing revenues and costs so the City can provide the affordable services and infrastructure that citizens need.
(Ensure Edmonton’s Financial Sustainability)
