Blatchford Receives 2014 National Urban Design Award

April 17, 2014Blatchford Redevelopment

The Blatchford Redevelopment project has been recognized with one of the country’s top honours in urban design.

The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the Canadian Institute of Planners, and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects have awarded the Blatchford Redevelopment project a National Urban Design Award in the Urban Design Plan category.

The National Urban Design Awards recognize the important role architectural excellence and design play in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Canadian cities.

Blatchford is one of the largest sustainable redevelopment projects in North America. Located on the former City Centre Airport lands, Blatchford will be home for up to 30,000 residents who will live, work, learn and play in a community that uses renewable energy, is carbon neutral and that empowers people to pursue a range of environmentally friendly choices.

“Developing an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable community in the heart of our city is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Mayor Don Iveson. “The Blatchford Redevelopment project will showcase Edmonton as an innovative and forward-looking city. We know this will be a game changer for our community, and it’s exciting to see the plan receive an award that recognizes the significant impact a project like this can have on a city’s long-term sustainability.”

The award selection committee described the redevelopment plan as not only “transformation of a central city airport site into a new community, but potentially transformative in terms of Edmonton urbanism. This is the City’s next generation of neighbourhoods that will offer an opportunity for innovation in ecology, environmental infrastructure, transportation, and a new form of public realm.”

The next steps in advancing the development include detailed engineering work and custom zoning to develop the unique urban look of the community. The City is expected to begin demolition of some of the buildings and runways this summer.
