2009 Public Consultation
In 2009, the City of Edmonton conducted an extensive public consultation to gather input on the future of the City Centre Airport lands.
The four-month public involvement process included:
- Open houses
- Workshops to review and refine challenges and opportunities for the airport’s future
- Self-guided tours of the lands, where people submitted images depicting what they did/didn’t want to see on the lands.
- Online forums
- Community workbooks for people to complete and submit. This included training for those who wanted to host community workshops.
- A Citizen Advisory Group, which included stakeholders with a range of perspectives on the issue, who guided the development and implementation of the public consultation process.
Considerable work was put into preparing the public involvement plan, which included providing citizens the opportunity to respond to interview questions and questionnaires to help define the issue. The resulting public involvement plan was approved by Council’s Executive Committee on March 4, 2009.
A public hearing was held June 24, 25 and 26, 2009 in Council Chambers following a report presented to Council on the four-month public consultation process.
Note: Air service issues are the mandate and responsibility of the Edmonton Airport Authority, and were not part of the scope of this public involvement process.
