Big Bin Events accept waste that cannot be set out for regular collection.

Big Bin events will begin in May. See schedule below.

Residents can drop off items such as old couches, chairs, mattresses and appliances free of charge. Computers and electronics will be accepted for recycling.
 

Accepted Items (no charge)

Bulky Items

Worn-out furniture, mattresses, car seats and other items too large for curbside.

Large Appliances

Drop off any appliance for free at a Big Bin Event or Free Eco Station Weekend.

  • Worn-out fridges, freezers, washers and dryers

Appliances that don't use refrigerant are always free to drop-off at an Eco Station.

Electronics

Old televisions, computers and any item with a battery or cord.

Tires

Passenger vehicle and ATV tires.

Scrap Metal

Old BBQs, rebar, and other metal items.

Yard Waste

Includes:

  • Grass clippings
  • Leaves
  • Mulch
  • Tree cones and needles
  • Yard and garden trimmings
  • Branches smaller than 0.75 metres (2.5 feet) in diameter
  • Roots, tree stumps and trunks

Elm wood is not accepted. It can be burned completely or disposed of at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre at no charge. Do not store or transport elm wood with other yard waste.

Sod, soil and rocks are not considered yard waste and will be charged a disposal fee.

Items Not Accepted

Please bring these items to an Eco Station or the Edmonton Waste Management Centre:

  • Household hazardous waste: automotive fluids, batteries, chemicals, paint and stains and other hazardous items
  • Gas-powered equipment: includes lawnmowers and snow blowers
  • Waste from businesses

Big Bin Events Do Not Accept Items for Reuse

Give your items a second life by bringing them to the Reuse Centre or a donation centre. Use the Reuse Directory to find a donation centre near you. Also consider listing your items online or gifting them to friends and family.

What Happens to Your Items

  • Large appliances, electronics, tires and scrap metal are sent for recycling
  • Yard waste is composted at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre
  • Bulky items and other garbage are taken to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre and transferred to landfill

Big Bin Events are hosted by the City, but grants are available to organizations wishing to host their own community drop-off event. Learn more about the Community Clean Up Grant Program.
