Establishing a New Dogs Off Leash Site
The process to establish a dogs off leash site should be initiated through the Community League in which the site you propose to designate falls within, so that the Community League would be aware of your interest and you would have their support. It is also recommended that you work with the Community Recreation Coordinator (CRC) from the Community Services Department.
The specific criteria used to establish an off-leash area are as follows:
- that the site is a City of Edmonton Parks property
- the site provides for unstructured recreation opportunities
- the site provides a variety of natural terrain
- that the site is easily accessible to the public
- that the site can be easily accessed by service/maintenance vehicles
- the site provides for safe exercising of dogs, while protecting the safety of others
- the site has a history of use as an ad-hoc off-leash area
- the site is in a community with a high density of owners of licensed dogs
If all of the above criteria are met, then a survey must be taken of all residents who live adjacent to, or abut, the proposed site. This survey would be a door-to-door canvassing carried out by the person(s) proposing the off leash site and the required information on the survey form is the name of the resident, address, telephone number, date and signature (one per household only).
Support of 66% or more is necessary before a site can be further considered.
