Celebrate Canada Day 2012 in Edmonton

Celebrate Canada’s 145th birthday in Edmonton by joining in on some of the many fun family events taking place around the city.  End the day by watching the spectacular Canada Day fireworks finale in the river valley.

Canada Day Fireworks Finale

Time:  11pm
Enjoy the magnificent fireworks display over Edmonton’s river valley parks and the North Saskatchewan River.

Good viewing locations:

  • *NEW!* Telus Field will be opening their doors at 8pm on Canada Day as a viewing area for the fireworks. Food and drink concessions. Free admission. Free parking.
  • Alberta Legislature Grounds
  • Victoria Park (River Valley Road)
  • Ezio Faraone Park (west entrance to High Level Bridge on 109 St. north)
  • Dantzer’s Hill (below Queen Elizabeth Park)
  • Government House Park (Groat Road & River Valley Road)

Note: No viewing is available from Kinsmen Park.

Viewing areas accessible on foot only (closed to vehicles):

  • River Valley Road
  • Walterdale Hill Road & Queen Elizabeth Park Road
  • 109 St. (between Saskatchewan Drive & the High Level Bridge)
  • Access is restricted in Kinsmen Park, Walterdale Hill, High Level & Menzies Bridges after road closure times. Kinsmen playground and picnic area are closed on Canada Day.

Road Closures for Fireworks Finale

Expect traffic delays two hours before the fireworks and 90 minutes after the show.  Please be patient and courteous to help to make the trip home from the fireworks safe for everyone.  For road closure details visit Road and Traffic updates.

Event Parking

Usual restrictions and increased parking bans will be in effect. With minimal parking in the area of many venues, Edmontonians are encouraged to take the bus or LRT. Vehicles illegally parked will be tagged and towed.

City Hall & Plaza

Time: 11:30am to 4pm
Show off your Canadian pride by celebrating our nation's birthday with free Canada Day activities at City Hall.  Enjoy live music and dancing, kids' crafts by The Works Art & Design Festival, face painting, City Hall tours and displays.  A Canada Day ceremony will take place at noon in the City Room.

Canada Day at the Edmonton Valley Zoo

Time:  9:30am to 6pm
Celebrate Canada Day and the Edmonton Valley Zoo’s 53rd birthday!  Visit the Canadian animals, eat a red and white cupcake, celebrate Lucy's birthday and enjoy a wonderful mix of family activities and entertainment. Regular admission rates apply.

Canada Day at the Muttart Conservatory

Time:  Noon to 4pm
Celebrate our nation’s birthday with a visit to the Muttart Conservatory. Enjoy live music, Canada Day crafts, face painting and family fun. Search the pyramids for Canadian symbols, build a structure with Bricks 4 Kidz and enjoy a slice of cake. Regular admission rates apply.

Dominion Day at Fort Edmonton Park

Time:  10am to 6pm
Join the park-wide celebration of Dominion Day. Visitors will be treated to a parade and a delicious slice of free cake (while supplies last) inside Blatchford Field Air Hangar. Throughout the day, music, games, and historical vignettes will add to the ambience of the park. Avoid the line ups; visit  Fort Edmonton Park to buy your tickets online.

Cool Off on Canada Day

Spend time soaking up the summer at a City of Edmonton outdoor pool or visit a recreation centre. Regular admission rates apply. For holiday hours, visit Recreation Centres. Or splash away the day at one of the City’s free Water Play Features (spray parks).

The Works Art & Design Festival at City Hall

Time:  Noon to 5pm
Join The Works Art & Design Festival at City Hall for a free paper crown-making workshop and take your photo wearing your unique crown celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Mill Woods Celebrates Canada Day

Time:  1pm to 11pm
Come to Mill Woods Park (66 St. & 23 Ave.) and join in on the free family activities.  Fireworks display takes place at 11 p.m. For road closure details, visit Road and Traffic updates.

Silly Summer Parade & Picnic in the Park

Time:  Noon to 4pm
The 25th annual Silly Summer Parade will mix Canada Day spirit with twisted humour and good old-fashioned fun.  Following the parade, the celebration will continue with a Picnic in the Park at Queen Alexandra School (7730-106 St.), in Old Strathcona, featuring carnival games, horse and wagon rides, children's activities, birthday cake and more.

Canada Day at Northlands (formerly held at Borden Park)

Time: Noon-4pm
Location:  Northlands’ Telus Stage, 7515-118 Ave.
Join Councillor Tony Caterina and MLA Peter Sandhu in celebration of Canada's birthday. Enjoy a fun-filled afternoon with free hotdogs, pop, cake, live entertainment and a variety of activities for the whole family. Canada Day at the Alberta Legislature

Time:  7am to 7pm
Celebrate our nation’s birthday at the Alberta Legislature with live entertainment and a variety of free family activities.

Celebrate Canada Day at the Art Gallery of Alberta

Time: 11am to 5pm
There's fun for the whole family at the Art Gallery of Alberta this Canada Day. FREE admission. Enjoy three floors of exhibitions to inspire, engage and entertain. Take part in Canada Day inspired art activities until 4pm. Call 780-422-6223 or visit Alberta Art Gallery for more information.

ETS Canada Day Service

All ETS bus routes will operate on their regular Sunday schedules throughout the day.  The LRT will operate on a 10 minute schedule all day. Regular Transit fares apply.  Depending on the weather and wind conditions during the fireworks, LRT service may be temporarily suspended across the Menzies Bridge. If service across the bridge is stopped, all trains will wait at the next station.  The anticipated delay is 20-25 minutes. Fireworks Safety

If you are buying or using fireworks in Edmonton for the Canada Day weekend, be safe and make sure you have a permit to use them.  Before you use fireworks, always check to see whether there is a fire ban in effect.  For more information contact the Fire Prevention Office at 780-496-3628.
