Have you ever wondered how artists create their masterpieces?

Join us as we discover artists in action throughout the Muttart Conservatory. Watch artists as they paint, join in on a sculpting demonstration, and get your hands dirty as you create a plant masterpiece of your own.

From music, to demonstrations and workshops, this event is sure to inspire your artist within.

Look forward to adult drop-in courses and a children’s discovery zone, where you’ll have the chance to learn tricks of the trade.

Event details:

  • Drop in Drawing – Venture into the Feature Pyramid and try your hand at sketching and drawing.  Ask the art instructor for tips and use the “Teddy Bears Picnic” theme as your muse.
  • Drop in Water Colour Painting for Adults: Led by Lorraine Shulba, an experience in watercolour painting that just might bring you to a life long love of painting and flowers. Designed for the beginner, this relaxed activity will bring out your inner artist.  Drop in painting in Centre Court from noon-4pm.
  • Improv Show lead by Rapid Fire Theatre: Rapid Fire Theatre has been performing live Improvised comedy in Edmonton for more than 30 years.  Their fast paced funny show takes its cues from the audience to create hilarious scene right in front of your eyes. They have performed all over the world and have won several international awards.  Join in from 2:30-3:15pm and watch their performance unfold.
  • Drop in Art Classes for Adults – If you are interested in print making using botanical items collect here at Muttart or oil pastel drawing, then be the first to sign up on event day for these exciting classes.  These will be introductory sessions meant to immerse beginners in the process.  (Limit of 15 people per class based on a sign up system on event day).
    • Botanical Print Making – noon
    • Oil Pastel Drawing – 1pm
  • Watch Artists in Action: We will have an array of artists working in different mediums showcasing and demonstrating their crafts.  Look forward to seeing members of the Northern Alberta Wood Carvers Association, the Sculptors’ Association of Alberta and the Edmonton Needlework Guild in action.   We will be joined by a multitude of individual artists demonstrating: mosaic art, ceramic art, polymer clay art and encaustic art to name a few.  You will be inspired by their skill and ability and may pick up a trick or two as you roam the facility.
  • Plant Pot Creation and Planting Activity: Make a plant creation of your own as you design a plant pot with the array of interesting items provided. Pop a seedling in to finish off your masterpiece and take it home to love and nurture (while supplies last).
  • Live Music: From 1-3pm let the melodies of Edmonton based band “Broken Clouds” create a soundscape to go along with the beauty found in the tropical pyramid.
  • Art Judging: Bring your keen eye for detail and take a discerning look at the masterpieces Muttart staff have created.  We want you to judge which of the canvases you like the best with the theme of “Muttart in Bloom” in mind.  This is a fun team building activity with a public input twist, so please cast your vote on the event day.
  • Children’s Discovery Zone: Let the little ones get their hands dirty creating art in the area set aside as the Children’s Discovery Zone.  Kids of all ages can sculpt a design of their choosing, and try their hand at water colour painting.  Staff and volunteers will be there to assist your child as they explore these mediums first hand.
  • Guided Tours:  Public Interpreters will be on hand to take patrons on a guided tour of the pyramids.  The theme for March is “Spring Fever: Plant Reproduction”.  Tours run at noon, 1:30pm and 3pm.
