Seasonal Super Sleuth

Grades: Preschool - Grade 2

Search for clues by using your senses and observation skills to solve the mysteries of nature each season. Explore nearby trails or your local schoolyard with a nature scavenger hunt to discover seasonal changes. From catching snowflakes to stalking squirrels, your students will be engaged in active discovery! Students will learn about local animals in Edmonton through hands-on activities and games, and discover what animals do to cope with the changing seasons.

Seasonal Adaptations

Grades: 1 - 3

What changes do the plants and animals living in Edmonton's River Valley experience as the seasons change? Join a naturalist on a safari into the depths of the Nature Centre woods. We'll explore the trails to look for evidence of animals, birds, insects, and plants, and in winter, try our hands at tracking wild animals too.

Amphibians in Crisis

Grades: 1 - 3

Did you know that many amphibians are in danger of disappearing? Biologists predict that one-third to one-half of amphibians could go extinct in our lifetime! Through hands-on activities and games, we'll learn about amphibian diversity and biology, the threats they are facing, and meet an ambassador amphibian up close and personal. Find out what specialized conditions amphibians require for survival and how you can help.

Dinosaur Adventures

Grades: Preschool - Grade 2

Travel back in time to the world of dinosaurs. Through hands-on activities, discover when they lived, what they ate, and how they moved. Your students will have an opportunity to compare dinosaur sizes with themselves and with familiar objects, examine real and model fossils, and do some dinosaur dancing. Compare the look of modern-day animals with pictures of prehistoric creatures, and pretend to be a palaeontologist as you search your classroom for hidden dino puzzle pieces! What kind of dinosaur will you construct when all the pieces are put together? This gigantic adventure is not to be missed!

Peter Rabbit Comes for a Visit

Grades: Preschool - K

Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit is in town this winter and it’s his birthday! The whole neighbourhood is invited to celebrate, but only the winter residents are able to attend. Learn about the creatures that have stayed in Edmonton for the winter. What do they eat, where do they sleep, and how do they keep warm? Using artifacts, games and activities, learn about snowshoe hares, squirrels, chickadees, magpies and more. 

Program Length: 1.5 hours

Snowshoe Bunnies

Grades: 1 - 3

Discover the wonders of winter on snowshoes. This program introduces young children to the exciting art of snowshoeing and how to identify animals by the evidence they leave behind in the snow. Students will increase their awareness of how plants and animals have adapted to our cold winter environment.

Available: December - February (as snow conditions permit)

Busy Bees and Bugs

Grades: Preschool - Grade 2

Peek inside a honeybee hive and discover the fascinating world of bees. Search for flowers, collect pollen, dance like bees, and taste honey from the comb! Learn some interesting bee facts, handle inactive hives and nests, and explore the insect world that bees share by going on a bug safari.

Program Length: 1.5 hours (Preschool), 2 hours (K - Gr. 2)

Life Cycles

Grades: 1 - 3

Eggs, nymphs, tadpoles, larvae, babies – all these terms describe the young stages of various life cycles. Join in this discovery-oriented program where students will learn about the life cycles of insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, and examine examples of different life cycle stages. At the Nature Centre, pond dipping can be included with this program, so please let us know if you'd like to add this component.

Pond Exploration

Grades: 2 - 3

Where do mosquitoes and dragonflies start their lives? How does a tadpole become a frog? Visit our wetland to find the answers to these and other fascinating questions. In addition to exploring the pond and playing nature games, students will share an encounter with one of the Nature Centre's snakes or salamanders.

Program Length: 2 hours

Children's Theatre with Kaybridge Puppets

The Ugly Duckling

Grades: Preschool - Grade 1

This timeless and compassionate tale by Hans Christian Andersen comes alive with puppetry and music. There's a big surprise down at the lake as Mama Duck's final egg hatches! The journey unfolds as we learn about fairness, friendship and true beauty. Kaybridge Puppets style of storytelling will capture the hearts of all ages!

Program Length: 1.5 hours

  • 30 minute performance
  • 25 minute puppetry workshop led by the puppeteer
  • 25 minute visit with spring baby animals

Location: John Janzen Nature Centre
Times: 9:30am & 12:30pm
Fees: $4.75/child (no refunds for absent children on the day of the performance)
Available: March 5 - 23, 2012

Your class will be sharing the performance with a maximum of 100 children. Games and animal visits will be shared with a maximum of 50 children. If this arrangement is not suitable to meet the needs of your class, you may book a private performance and program for a fee of $475.

The teacher and 1 adult supervisor per 3 children will be free of charge. All additional adults will pay $4.75 each. Siblings not enrolled in your school's program, but accompanying adult supervisors will be charged the regular fee of $4.75.

In order to stay within fire code regulations, all people including parents and siblings accompanying your field trip must be booked with your registration.

If your class fails to attend the performance, or provides less than 48 hours notice that you will not be attending, the full performance fees will be charged to you. A cancellation fee of $50 will be charged if you cancel within 2 weeks of your scheduled date.
