Arctic Shores Grand Opening at the Edmonton Valley Zoo

The Arctic Shores exhibit at the Edmonton Valley Zoo is now complete – come and check out this northern Arctic wonderland! Take a tour of the Arctic Shores with an interpreter and learn all about Inuit and Arctic Animal life! Children will enjoy making an Arctic Animal craft or the Arctic Animal Airbrushed Art! “Get Closer” with a variety of animal encounters or learn about the new and exciting changes still happening at the Edmonton Valley Zoo! An Inuit Elder will be on hand to show you living tools, share stories and help you build your very own Inukshuk. Complimentary cupcakes will cap off the festivities!  Bundle up and come on down to help us celebrate the exciting changes at this fabulous facility!

Activities from noon-4pm inclusive:

Arctic Animal Crafts (Saito) Create your favourite Arctic Animal – a seal, fox, wolf or ground squirrel!

Arctic Animal Airbrushed Art (Saito) Awesome airbrush art – and it’s free!

Arctic Animal Adaptations Touch Table featuring Polar Bears International (Learning Lair) Join an interpreter to learn about Arctic Animal Adaptations! Also, learn about environmental impacts, conservation, and research in the Arctic that PBI is doing!

Northern Peoples Games (Learning Lair) Join an interpreter and play Inuit games – skills developed by playing these games were often those necessary for everyday survival in the Arctic!

Inuit Living Display featuring Sun and Moon Visionaries – Aboriginal Artisan Society (Saito) Check out these amazing displays – learn about Inuit culture, see Living Tools, ask questions, and hear some Inuit stories!

Meet an Inuit Elder (Saito) Learn what life is like living in the Arctic!

Water for Wildlife Arctic Food Chain (Arctic Shores/Learning Lair Weather Dependant) Learn why water is so important for all animals – complete the food chain and win a prize!

Water Conservation is very important to our resident animals in Arctic Shores including our Harbour Seals and South American Sea Lion! AWQA (Alberta Water Quality Awareness) will be on hand to kick off Canada Water Week (March 19-25) – celebrate and learn about water conservation! Register with them before April 30th to receive a free water test kit! For more information visit www.awqa.ca

Time specific activities:

11am Elephant Talk (Elephant House) Learn about the life of an elephant!

1:00pm Arctic Shores Cupcake Service! (Saito) Celebrate the grand opening of Arctic Shores with a complimentary cupcake!

1:30, 2:30, 3:30pm Arctic Shores Tours (Meet at Arctic Shores Entrance) Take a tour with an interpreter to see the new exhibit!

2:00pm Arctic Wolf Demonstration (Arctic Shores Boardwalk Entrance) All about Arctic Wolves! Get closer to Shilah and Kayok, two female Arctic wolves, as they go on a walk around the zoo. Watch the zookeepers work closely with the wolves and learn why behavioural training is important for animal health.

3pm Inukshuk Building with an Inuit Elder (Saito) Learn how and why the Inukshuk was used in the Arctic - and build your very own to take home! (while supplies last)
