About Our Zoo

Edmonton Valley Zoo
Intimate. Inspiring. Nurturing. Natural. Cool
Nestled on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, the Edmonton Valley Zoo is a small and intimate zoo that provides authentic and engaging animal experiences.
Edmonton City Council recently approved $50 million in capital funding to support the important work of the zoo. The funding will allow the City to move forward and begin to create a vibrant new zoo with improved habitats, better opportunities for guests to closely interact with animals, and state-of the-art research and education facilities. Construction is underway now.
Vision
A special place that inspires love and learning of animals and nature.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo welcomed its first guests on July 1, 1959. A huge crowd was expected to “invade the grounds following the official opening by Mayor Hawrelak”, stated the June 30 Edmonton Journal.
Construction
With $50 million in construction underway, the Edmonton Valley Zoo is undergoing a significant transformation – continuing to transition from the quaint 1959 Storyland Valley Zoo to a zoo noted for innovative learning opportunities.
Arctic Shores
Recreating an Arctic shoreline, this northern wonderland will be home to seals, sea lions, Arctic foxes and ground squirrels.
The Wander Trail
This magnificent central trail system will interpret the North Saskatchewan river valley as it winds its way through Alberta, from the grasslands to the aspen parklands and beyond to the boreal forest.
New Entry Plaza
The new entry area will feature the otter habitat, a new state-of-the-art education facility, guest services including a cafe and rest areas.
